Vaccinations

Many diseases that were once very prevalent in our society are now virtually unheard of, thanks to the development of key vaccinations. Here at Healthfit Colorado, we provide a number of vaccines for children and adults that will allow you to significantly reduce your risk of disease.

Importance of Immunization

Immunization and vaccination are often thought of as being the same thing, but they are actually two different processes. Immunization occurs whenever a person’s immune system becomes strengthened against a particular immunogen. Vaccines on the other hand are the tool used to enhance the immune system, as they strengthen it in order to better protect your body against certain diseases. Vaccines actually contain weakened organisms that when injected, trigger your own body to build immunity and prevent future infections.

Are Vaccines Necessary?

People often question whether or not vaccines are even necessary in today’s society. The fact that many individuals have not witnessed devastating diseases such as polio firsthand leaves them to believe that there is little or no risk to be concerned with. The truth is that outbreaks of diseases such as measles, mumps, and even polio do occur in the United States, but are easily preventable when vaccinations are provided in a timely manner.

Some parents are concerned about information they have read over the Internet that suggest vaccines are unsafe. While there is always a chance of side effects, the benefits do outweigh the risks in most cases. Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have about vaccines so that we can address them for you.

When to Vaccinate

Although they are thought of as being only for children, vaccinations are actually available for every stage of life from birth to your senior adult years. Infants age 18 and under are typically given a set of vaccinations to protect them from common childhood illnesses. Children born today can be vaccinated against 17 different diseases, whereas 20 years ago, that number was only nine.

Aside from early childhood vaccinations, some other occasions that may call for vaccines include:

  • Entering grade school or college
  • Traveling to foreign countries
  • Joining the military or Peace Corps
  • Preventing common illnesses such as the flu

You may also require “booster” shots periodically to keep your immunizations current. An example is a tetanus shot, which should be given at least every ten years to prevent infection from setting in after a moderate to serious scrape, burn, cut, or puncture wound.
